Your brain just spent the last twenty minutes turning two random wins into a pattern, and it charged you full price for the story.

The Study That Told Everyone the Streak Was a Myth

In 1985, psychologists Thomas Gilovich, Robert Vallone, and Amos Tversky published a paper in Cognitive Psychology that became one of the most cited findings in behavioral science. They tore through shooting records for the Philadelphia 76ers and free-throw data from the Boston Celtics, then ran controlled shooting experiments at Cornell, hunting for evidence that a player who'd made his last few shots was statistically more likely to make the next one. They found nothing. A make was no more predictive of the next shot than a miss. The "hot hand" — the thing every fan, coach, and player swore they could see — didn't exist in the numbers. It was a story the brain told about randomness, and for over thirty years, that was the final word.

The Twist Nobody Saw Coming — For 33 Years

Here's the part almost nobody tells you, and it's the part that actually matters: in 2018, economists Joshua Miller and Adam Sanjurjo published a paper in Econometrica that found something uncomfortable buried in the original method. When you select only the shots that immediately followed a streak of hits, and calculate a success rate from that filtered subset, you introduce a hidden bias — even in a genuinely random, coin-flip sequence, that specific way of slicing the data will show a lower success rate than the true fifty percent, purely as a mathematical artifact of the sampling method. Run the correction on Gilovich's original data, and the picture changes. A real, if modest, hot-hand effect re-emerges from the noise the flawed method had been suppressing for over three decades.

Sit with that for a second. An entire generation of scientists, journalists, and casual fans repeated "the hot hand is a myth" as settled fact, and the myth about the myth stood unchallenged for longer than most people reading this have been alive. Not because anyone lied. Because a subtle statistical error was invisible until someone went looking hard enough to find it.

Why the Correction Doesn't Actually Save You

If your instinct just now was relief — see, the hot hand is real, my streak instinct was right all along — that's the exact trap this story is built to catch you in twice. Miller and Sanjurjo's correction found a small, real statistical uptick buried in noisy data. It did not find that a person who wins twice in a row can reliably predict they'll win a third time, and it absolutely did not find that the feeling of being unstoppable tracks the actual, tiny size of that effect. The confidence you feel after two wins is not calibrated to a few corrected percentage points hidden in a dataset. It's calibrated to nothing. Your brain generates the same surge of certainty whether the underlying effect is real, fake, or somewhere in between, because the feeling isn't measuring the odds. It's measuring the pattern-recognition machinery firing on a sequence of two or three events, which is nowhere near enough data to detect anything real even when something real exists.

Point one: nothing meaningfully changed between your first win and your second. If the honest answer is no, the confidence you're running on is borrowed against a pattern that mostly isn't there, not earned from anything solid underneath it.

The Part That Applies Everywhere, Not Just Casinos

It's a story about how a brain built to find patterns treats any short winning run — three good client calls in a row, two dates that went well, a stretch where every trade you made worked out — as if it were a signal instead of what it almost always is: noise your nervous system is desperate to read as a message.
