A Lie Repeated Enough Times Stops Needing to Be True

You've repeated a claim out loud, more than once, that you have never once fact-checked. Not because you're careless. Because by the time it reached you, it had already been said by so many people that checking it felt redundant — like verifying that water is wet.
Nobody handed you evidence. They handed you volume. Your brain, reasonably, mistook one for the other.
The Mechanism Has a Name and It Isn't New
In 1999, legal scholars Timur Kuran and Cass Sunstein published a paper in the Stanford Law Review that named the exact shape of this failure: the availability cascade. Their argument was mechanical, almost clinical. A claim enters public conversation. Some people repeat it because they genuinely believe it — that's the informational half. Others repeat it not because they've verified it, but because not repeating it, once everyone else has, carries a social cost. Silence starts to read as disagreement, and disagreement starts to read as suspicious. That's the reputational half. Together, the two motives feed each other: the more a claim circulates, the more available it becomes in memory, and the more available something feels, the more true it feels — completely independent of whether it's actually correct.
Kuran and Sunstein weren't writing about social media; there wasn't much of one yet. Their case studies were Love Canal, where genuine contamination triggered a scare that mushroomed past what the actual data supported, and the Alar pesticide panic of the late 1980s, where a substance later shown to pose minimal risk drove a national produce boycott anyway. In both cases, the underlying facts were almost beside the point by the time the cascade peaked. What mattered was that everyone had already heard it enough times to stop asking where "it" came from.
The Loop Runs Faster Now, Not Differently
The internet didn't invent the availability cascade. It removed the friction that used to slow it down. A 2023 review in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, analyzing over 3,000 studies on online misinformation spread between 2013 and 2023, found the modern version running exactly on Kuran and Sunstein's original mechanism, just faster: false claims cascade through networks wider and longer-lived than the corrections that follow them, and network homophily — the tendency to cluster with people who already agree with you — turns a comment section into a closed loop where the claim only ever meets agreement, never friction. A 2024 study went further and found something almost perverse: framing a claim with scientific-sounding authority increased its cascade speed in networks already primed to spread it, regardless of whether the framing was accurate. The credibility marker got absorbed into the cascade instead of interrupting it.
This is the part worth sitting with if you've ever wondered why correcting a widely-repeated claim feels like shouting into a wall. You're not competing with the claim's evidence. There usually isn't any to compete with. You're competing with the sheer number of times it's already been said, and repetition has its own gravity, independent of accuracy, that a single correction — however well-sourced — rarely matches.
Why You Added Your Voice to It
Here's the uncomfortable middle step Kuran and Sunstein's framework forces you to look at: you didn't just receive the cascade. At some point, you probably fed it. You repeated the claim in a comment, a group chat, a conversation with a friend — not because you'd done the work to confirm it, but because everyone around you already seemed certain, and being the one person asking "wait, is this actually true?" felt like a social liability you didn't want to pay.
That instinct isn't stupidity. It's the reputational half of the cascade operating exactly as Kuran and Sunstein described it — a rational-feeling response to a social environment where disagreement costs more, in the moment, than silent agreement. The trouble is that everyone in the loop is making the same calculation at the same time, which means the "consensus" you're deferring to was never actually built out of independent judgment. It was built out of a few genuine believers and a much larger number of people making the same reputational bet you just made, each one adding apparent weight to a claim that, examined individually, none of them had actually checked.
The Turn
The instinct is to think the fix is "do more research before you repeat something." That's true, but it's not the load-bearing move. The load-bearing move is smaller and more specific: before you repeat a claim, ask exactly one question — is this well-evidenced, or just well-repeated? Those feel identical from inside a cascade. They are not remotely the same thing, and the entire mechanism Kuran and Sunstein described depends on you never separating them.
Trace one belief you've repeated more than once back to its actual origin — not the person who told you, but the original source, the study, the report, the incident — and you'll find, most of the time, that no one in the chain between you and the source ever checked either. Everyone was citing everyone else's certainty. Nobody was citing evidence.
What You're Actually Standing In
This isn't gullibility, and treating it like a personal failure misses what Kuran and Sunstein were actually pointing at: your brain is wired to trust the crowd, because for most of human history, the crowd's consensus was a decent proxy for safety and truth. That wiring didn't get worse. It just got exploited by an information environment that can manufacture the appearance of a crowd — repetition, volume, algorithmic amplification — without any of the independent verification the wiring evolved to assume was happening underneath it.
The question that actually protects you isn't "who else believes this." It's the one nobody in the cascade wants to be the first to ask out loud: has anyone here actually checked?
