Someone is talking to you right now. You're nodding. Your eyes are on their face. And some other part of your attention is already scanning past them — the phone face-up on the table, the notification you half-registered, the thing you were doing before this conversation started and the thing you'll do the second it ends. You're technically here. You end the day exhausted and can't name a single thing that used you up, because nothing did. Everything did, at 10 percent each, all at once.

There's a name for this, and it's twenty-eight years old.

The Woman Who Named the Thing You're Doing Right Now

In 1998, Linda Stone — a researcher who'd spent years inside Apple and Microsoft watching how knowledge workers actually behaved — coined "continuous partial attention" to describe a state distinct from multitasking. Multitasking is choosing to split focus across tasks for productivity. Stone's term described something more automatic and more anxious: constantly scanning everything at once, optimizing to not miss anything, "motivated by a desire to be a live node on the network," as she put it. You're not switching between tasks on purpose. You're maintaining a permanent low-grade vigilance so that nothing arrives without you noticing — and vigilance, sustained long enough, stops being a choice and starts being your baseline.

Stone found evidence of the physical cost almost by accident. In research she called "email apnea," she discovered that roughly 80 percent of people hold their breath or breathe shallowly the moment they open email — the body's stress response firing before any actual bad news has arrived, just from the anticipation of scanning. "I noticed, almost immediately, that once I started to work on email, I was either shallow breathing or holding my breath," she wrote. The 20 percent who didn't do this were, tellingly, people trained in disciplines that demand sustained bodily awareness — pilots, dancers, athletes. Everyone else's body was already bracing before their mind had processed anything to brace against.

The Bill Comes Due Twenty-Three Minutes Later

Stone's observation was descriptive. Gloria Mark, a researcher at UC Irvine, quantified the cost empirically. Her research — beginning with a widely cited 2008 CHI conference paper, "The Cost of Interrupted Work: More Speed and Stress," and extended across a decade of subsequent studies — found that knowledge workers face an interruption roughly every ten and a half minutes, and that nearly half of those interruptions are self-inflicted: you check the phone nobody made you check. After each interruption, full cognitive refocus takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds. Run the arithmetic on a normal workday and the number gets bleak fast — there isn't enough uninterrupted runway between self-inflicted interruptions to ever reach deep focus at all. You're not failing to concentrate. You're structurally prevented from ever completing the return trip.

This is the part that reframes the whole thing: continuous partial attention isn't a productivity problem wearing a psychology costume. It's a nervous system problem. Somatic hypervigilance — the body staying braced for a threat that already passed — runs on the identical wiring. Scanning constantly for what you might be missing online is functionally the same alertness loop as scanning a room for danger. The brain doesn't distinguish "I might miss a notification" from "something might be wrong" nearly as cleanly as we'd like to believe; both register as an open threat that has to stay monitored. Missing something, to a nervous system trained this way, doesn't feel like a minor inconvenience. It feels like exposure.

You Weren't Built Distractible. You Were Trained Vigilant

The instinct is to blame this on personal weakness — you're bad at focusing, you have no discipline, you need to try harder to be present. That framing gets the causality backwards. Nobody is born scanning four inputs at once for signs of danger. That's a trained response to an environment that punishes single-tasking with the fear of missing something urgent — a message, an opportunity, a piece of news that everyone else already has and you don't. The scanning isn't laziness. It's a threat-response that's been running so continuously it no longer registers as fear. It just registers as normal.

And normal is exactly the problem, because a nervous system that never gets to stand down never gets to actually rest, even during rest. You can lie in bed with the phone across the room and still feel the scanning reflex firing on nothing, because the reflex isn't attached to the phone anymore. It's attached to you.

So Actually — Presence Was Never the Missing Skill

Here's the reframe worth sitting with: you were never bad at being present. Presence was taken from you by degrees, one notification and one "just in case" check at a time, until vigilance became the resting state instead of the exception. Nothing about your character needs fixing. What needs interrupting is the loop.

Mark's own research, and Stone's, point to the same intervention, and it's smaller than it sounds: one phone in another room, twenty minutes, one person, one thing. Not a digital detox. Not a philosophy. A single deliberate window where the nervous system gets direct evidence that nothing catastrophic happens when it stops scanning. Presence doesn't need to be relearned from zero. It comes back fast, the way breath comes back fast the moment you notice you've been holding it — because it was never gone. It was just outbid, every ten minutes, by a system convinced that stopping was dangerous.

The job of staying on alert for everything was never supposed to be yours to hold alone, all day, for years. It's yours now to put down — a little, on purpose, starting with the next conversation you're actually in the room for.
