Sixty-eight percent reported phantom vibrations, with the rate climbing higher among younger staff and among anyone whose device stayed physically attached to their body for long stretches. A more recent 2024 study put undergraduate prevalence at 49.3% — the specific number moves around study to study, but the finding underneath it hasn't: this is common, it's been documented for well over a decade, and it's getting studied because it doesn't go away on its own.

Which means the fix isn't willpower, and it isn't convincing yourself to "just relax."
